Happy Thanksgiving Eve to my friends in the U.S.!

What are you doing for Thanksgiving? It’s the four of us at home so it’s going to be pretty low key. I’m more than happy with that. Holiday traveling stress is no fun!

We are officially hip deep in the holiday season. It’s easy to get lost in the excitement of it all. You go out of your way to make sure everything is ready, and everyone has to have the “best holiday ever.” Sound familiar?

Being healthy and relaxed makes it easier for you to accomplish all the wonderful things you want to do for family and friends. It’s tough to shop, decorate or cook when you feel run down, have a cold, or need sleep.

Whether you’re traveling to be with your families or staying home, it’s essential to remember to focus on your own needs as well during this busy time of year and as the new year approaches.

Remember – you can’t take care of others, unless you take care of yourself first.

Here are ways to take care of yourself over the holidays and other busy times throughout the year.

Breathe

I know it’s cliche and it seems like everyone says it, but it’s so true. When’s the last time you took a nice a DEEP breath and then let it all out with a big sigh? Try it and it will instantly make you feel better.

Sleep

When life gets busy and there just doesn’t seem like there’s enough time in the day to get everything done, what usually is the first to go? Sleep. We stay up later. We get up earlier. Make sleep a priority! It’s easy to think that a few extra hours of work will do you more good, but it won’t. Sleep will.

Listen to Music

Put on happy Christmas carols. Or 80s pop. Or country. Whatever floats your boat. Your favorite music will boost your mood and keep you happy.

Get Outside

Spending time outside on a walk, run or hike will instantly boost your mood. True story. I mean, how can it not? I think fresh air and sunshine is the cure for almost anything. However, with the limited amount of daylight hours now, it’s hard to get ample Vitamin D, especially here in the Northeast. Did you know that 24% of American’s are at risk for Vitamin D deficiency? Taking two servings of Adora Calcium Supplements throughout the day fulfills the recommended daily level of vitamin D. There is now 500 IU of Vitamin D3 in each disk. And you get a sweet chocolate treat. Score!

Make a List

I’m a fan of list making. If it’s on paper, I’ll do it. If not, it’s off in the Cloud somewhere.  It also helps to prioritize most important to least. Make sure you stick to the list and don’t get sidetracked by Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest. Am I the only one who can lose hours looking at cats vs. cucumber videos on Facebook or get sucked into how to make the perfect pumpkin muffin on Pinterest? Damn you social media!

Make Time to Veg

Being still like broccoli is vital. Whether it’s watching brainless TV or laying in stillness for 5 minutes, find a way to rest your brain from the endless things you feel you need to accomplish. You’ll feel refreshed and ready to go again.

Dance Party!

I think there should be mandatory dance parties in every work environment and home at least hourly. Imagine how much better we all will feel after shaking it off?

Indulge and Eat Well

This time of year is when the indulging monster comes out. By all means, I’m all for indulging and enjoying your favorite holiday treats.  But don’t forget to eat really well during 80-90% of the time. Eat greens and whole foods at every meal. Don’t eat the junk you don’t really care about just because it’s there. This isn’t the only time of year to eat cookies. There’s no rule that Christmas cookies can only be eaten in December!

I’m planning on taking the rest of the week off from blogging to fully enjoy the time with my family. I hope you have a wonderful rest of the week and make yourself a priority every single day!

How do you take care of yourself in busy times?

  1. I need this so much! I’m so stressed right now, getting ready for our Turkey Trot, busy, planning for vacation, and I’m unable to run it off right now (I know you understand that!). Breathing and sleeping will be my mantra for the weekend, once we get through this race. I’m taking off from blogging too, and really looking forward to a few stress free days. Happy Thanksgiving!

  2. I am big on getting enough sleep! I always need more and am always doing “one more thing” instead of going to bed. Sleep is awesome :)
    Have a wonderful Thanksgiving!!!! xo

  3. Great ideas! I learned this one the hard way when life got especially busy after my twins were born… as a result of those crazy early days, I’m better now at saying “no”….

This year, I said no to family travel for Thanksgiving, no to work gift exchanges, and I’m taking a full month off from training. Feels good :)

Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family!
