Running with A Legend

Hi Friends! Hope you all had a great weekend. It was absolutely gorgeous here. Fall weather perfection. If only it stayed like this for the entire season…

I got a 10 mile run in Sunday morning. It was great up until the last 2 miles. Let’s just say those last 2 miles were the fastest of the 10 because I needed to get home STAT! Sorry for the TMI but it’s one of those lovely runner’s problems that happens to everyone. Am I right? πŸ˜‰ So I’m super excited for this week. Why? On Wednesday, I am running with the legendary, Joan Benoit Samuelson! No big deal, right? Gah!!!! A few weeks ago, I entered a contest to have the opportunity to run with Joan in conjunction with a screening of her new documentary, There is No Finish Line. I was thrilled when I got the email that I was chosen with a handful of others for a 30 minute warm up and discussion, 30 minute run and a post run stretch and talk with Joan. How cool is that?

If you don’t know anything about Joan, here’s a few facts:

  • World Marathon Record – 1983 (Boston Marathon 2:22:43)
  • Winner of first women’s Olympic Marathon 1984 (2:24:52)
  • American Marathon Record for women ages 45-49 (2:42:28)
  • American Marathon Record for women ages 50-54 (2:49:08)
  • Olympic Hall of Famer

Impressive list, no?

Check out this video from Runner’s World on what makes this woman a LEGEND. Trust me when I saw you will be inspired beyond words.

I’ve always been a fan of Joan’s but even more so since I moved to New Hampshire. She’s a New Englander and gives back to her community in so many ways. She founded the Beach to Beacon 10K and stands at the finish line to congratulate every single finisher. She also has done that at the Tufts 10K. Her love of running and it’s community is evident. I love that she now says, “I used to plan my day around my running, now I plan my running around my day.”

I found this video on her site from Nike (who she does research for now). I got chills and even teared up a bit watching it. I want to personally thank Joan for paving the way for all women athletes. We’ve made huge strides since her landmark wins. We still have more to go but without her, who knows where we would be right now. THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU!

Wait for it….LEGENDARY!

So excited to be crossing this off My FitFluential Fitness Bucket List!

Any questions you want me to ask Joan?

  1. AMAZING!!! I can’t believe you’re running with Joan!! Oh my goodness what an opportunity…and not just to run with her but to be able to spend time talking to her as well. She must have some great stories to tell and some super inspiring words, I can’t wait to hear all about it!
