7 Running Things To Do

Over the weekend, I ran my longest distance to date since November – 9 miles. It felt great. I felt strong. I felt light. I felt on fire. I even finished with negative splits! I like how the progress is going. I noticed my tendon was a little bit tender later in the day as I ran to keep up with my daughter on her bike. I don’t like that but I stretched and foam rolled some more and it’s feeling good again. Slow and steady wins the race, right?

As I stepped out the door to begin my run, I felt different. Lighter. Like a weight had been lifted off my shoulders. Was it that I didn’t have 10,000 layers on?


It was more of what I smelled.

It smelled like Spring.

Dirt. Mud. But at the same time clean, new, fresh. It smelled marvelous. I took a deep breath in and started off.

Spring has sprung!

To celebrate this glorious turn of events, I declared that I will not wear full length tights till at least December. Of course, temps are still in the 30s but I simply refuse to acknowledge that. I also started to think of what I’d like to do with running now that I’m coming out of hibernation (aka off my treadmill in the basement).

7 Running Things to Do for Spring

  1. Get outside! – First and foremost. I tolerate the treadmill but I’m missing the fresh air, the birds, the sunrise. With the warmer temps and gaining morning daylight every day, I’m so ready to return to running primarily outside again.
  2. Hit the trails. – Most of the trails around me are still covered in deep snow. I’m hoping the warmer temps and rain will get rid of it. Of course, mud season is in full effect so I may have to wait awhile for this one unless I want to lose a shoe or two.
  3. Run with friends. – I’ve been absent from group runs for far too long. I miss the conversations. The stories. The support. The fun. The laughter. Even if I can get in one or two runs with a friend or a group a week, I’ll be happy. They make me a better runner just by association!
  4. Hit the track. – I’ve never been a huge fan of the track. I tend to do much of my speed work on the treadmill which is so much easier. The belt’s moving and I just need to keep up. With the track, it’s all me. No help from anything. It’s time to get out of my comfort zone and get uncomfortable.
  5. Start a running group. – This ties in with all of the above. I know there are people in my community who want to run. I want to share my love of running and in the process make some new friends. It’s a winning situation for all!
  6. Plan – I want to do a marathon in the Fall. Which one? I have no idea. However, there is potential for something very, very cool that I hope to be a part of. I’ll keep you posted on what develops!
  7. Run and love it! – I love running no matter what but I want to run everywhere and everything. 5ks, 10ks, half marathon, marathon, trails, on the beach. Wherever, I’m going to run it and love it.

  1. It IS finally feeling like Spring around these parts! We’ve had a ton of rain since our 40 cm of snow last Wednesday (yep, 40cm!) so I have never been so happy to see rain haha! Love all of these running tips…we have a running group in our subdivision, but I’m just starting my running again since my baby arrived in January so I’ve been working on it myself. I think you’ve inspired me to join them for some runs though.

    I am also planning on a full this fall and I think I have it narrowed down. NYC didn’t happen this year so I had to start searching again! Boo to lottery marathons! ๐Ÿ™‚

  2. Yes, yes, yes!!! I can’t wait to actually use an OUTDOOR track. I was hoping to do that today but it’s pouring rain. Again. Yes, spring has sprung (and I was able to bike and ride outside Saturday!) but now there’s rain and lots of it. I guess I’m happy it’s not snow.

  3. There really is something so special about getting outside in the spring after being stuck indoors all winter. I think one of the best things that comes with running in the spring is getting to bring my dog along for the runs! I’m slightly nervous to join a running group as I’m pretty slow and worry that most running groups are full of speedy runners.

  4. You know numbers 1 and 2 are my faves! We hit the trails yesterday and this was after about 36 hours of steady rainโ€ฆsuch a mudfest! But so much fun. I’m glad you are feeling strong and ready to rock spring!

    Those running things to do all sound great to me. I would personally recommend the running around a track, you can often run a lot faster, and it is great for building some speed. I always do some kind of running around a track. It is a great place to do strides to practice the end of a race.

    I am a little scared of trails after falling and needing stitches last year, but maybe when my racing season is over ๐Ÿ™‚

  6. Great list – I keep thinking that it would be fun to start a running group here – maybe one day.
    I’m actually gearing up for a big race in May and then I think I will back off on my running – I already have way more miles for 2014 than I typically do at this point in the year – good but I also know that I have to be careful when I start running too many miles.

    1. There are great running groups in my area but I’m being a little selfish in that I want a group that meets in the early mornings right in my town! ๐Ÿ™‚

  7. It is finally feeling like Spring, but it rained here all weekend. I did a race in the rain…lol great job on the run! I finally joined a local running group before Christmas, but I still haven’t gone and met anyone..yet. I think it will be good motivation once I get myself going. I like the treadmill for speed work also ๐Ÿ™‚

  8. Love and agree with everything on your list. We changed our clocks this weekend so I it was light out until 8 p.m. here in France. I put my shoes on at 7:30 p.m. and did a qui 3 miles… it flet great to be able to run in the evening, outside. Yeah!
