My Happy Sweat

Warrior II -

Hey guys!

Hope you all had a marvelous weekend! I’m linking up with Katie today to get the week started right. I had a happy sweat filled weekend. Those are always the best, no?

Saturday was the kick off of Laura’s 5 by the 5th Virtual Race Series for the next few months. I’m slowly easing up my mileage and coincidentally just got back up to running 3 miles last week. Perfect timing! My plan for this series is to just try to improve my time with each month. Last Spring when I did the series, I did every “race” on the treadmill. This time, I’m going outside.

I knew going into the run that I wanted to run harder than I have been. Kind of “let’s see what we can do with no speed work (or running till a few weeks ago) since November” type of thing. Thankfully the weather was simply tropical (mid 30s woohoo!).

I did a mile walk on my treadmill as a warm up before heading out the door.

Mile 1: I felt good, comfortable. 8:11

Mile 2: I concentrated on cadence (shorten strides, aim for 180 spm). 8:00

Mile 3: I was breathing harder and feeling a little tired. Getting close to the “I might puke” stage. 7:26

Mile 0.1: Almost there…dang ice on the sidewalk is slowing me down! 7:53

Finish: 24:23

I’m quite happy with that time with all things considered. My foot felt good. I felt really good just to be running.

I said I wasn’t going to sign up for any races till my foot felt 100% better and my mileage was up more. Well….I lied. I couldn’t miss out on one of my favorite races in May – Wallis Sands Half Marathon. (BTW – I just saw that I’m on one of the rotating pics on their site!). I saw that it was 80% full last week so I knew I couldn’t wait. I’m in! It’s going to be a good time with tons of my friends doing it as well. I can’t wait to start training for it. I really, really miss long runs and my running friends.

Sunday brought another sweatfest that made me feel like my old self. I tried out a new spinning boutique studio, Cycle Fierce.

Spinning Bike |

When I gave up my gym membership, 3 1/2 years ago, spinning was one of the things I’ve missed the most. Lately I’ve been thinking of joining a gym just to get the classes again. So I was thrilled when Cycle Fierce opened. Sunday was an awesome theme ride full of music from bands with a connection to Seattle and a pseudo Cycle Cross event. For me, the music totally makes the class. FYI  Heart’s, Barracuda, is an awesome hill climbing song. The instructor did a fantastic job of visually guiding us through each lap. The tempo of the music was perfect for each sprint, hill climb or time trial. I was a sweaty happy lady at the end.

What can I say, I love a good workout!

Don’t forget, today is day 1 of the #MNBChallenge. Join in and you could win big!

Let me here it –

How was your weekend?

  1. Nice job on your 5K! When I saw the snow photo, it reminded me of why we moved to NC for retirement. I love NH and miss it at times, but the winters can be tough. Glad you were able to get outside for your run. I have only been to one spin class and my gym does not offer spin classes.

  2. You’re coming back really fast–that’s awesome! It makes all the difference. And May is far enough away to give yourself to come back healthy and still do the race.

I love spinning, too. A new studio opened up in Baltimore that sounds really cool–they offer things like spin/yoga combos and spin/Tabata combos. I need to try it!

  3. Yay! So wonderful you are making your way back! Dont worry about pace feeling faster than usual. It will come back really quick! I always have a horrible paranoia that it never will, but your muscles remember what they are doing faster than you think!

I know I have said this to you before, but those injuries have always made me faster in the long run! I cant wait to see what you do later this year!

As for spinning, HATE IT! That is a nice bike though! Will make it easier to keep up your cross training 🙂

  6. Hey Angela!
My friend and I took up spin about 2 months ago and I LOVE IT!
My first class was probably one of the hardest things ever and I was definitely not expecting to sweat that much.
Now I go about 4-5 times a week.
    Great Job on the 5K!
