My Favorite Yoga Hip Openers

Try these 3 yoga poses for runners to keep your hips healthy and happy.

Big Announcements

I’ve got two big announcements for the day:

1. I’m switching over to my own domain name!  I’ll sticking with “Happy Fit Mama” but dropping wordpress from the title.  I’ve never had a problem with them but would like a little bit more freedom to pursue things that they don’t allow.  I hope everything switches without a problem.  Thank God Ron is an IT guy because I’m clueless about this stuff.  I’ll let everyone know when I’m officially switched so you can change blogrolls, urls, etc.

2. I registered for my first marathon!!  On September 30th I will be running the Smuttynose Rockfest Marathon.  I had a couple requirements for my first marathon experience: (1) must be a local race (2) during the summer would be ideal.  This race doesn’t fit the summer requirement but it’s 20 minutes from my house.  Plus, Hampton is flat and the course runs along the ocean primarily.  You can’t beat that!  I’m super stoked for the race.  My plan is to hook up with my local running store, Runner’s Alley, for long runs on Saturdays.  They may also have a marathon training group again this year.  I need some running buddies to keep me sane during the long runs!  Wish me luck!

Yoga Hip Openers

So it’s finally Friday again.  Happy Friday everyone!  Who else is ready for the weekend?  I can’t wait!  I love weekends not just for the extra time to hang out with my family but lately it’s been the only time I can squeeze in actual yoga classes at Rasamaya.  My schedule and theirs just don’t gel at this point.  So during the week it’s up to me to stretch out all my kinks from carrying 2 toddlers around, being on my feet at work all day, and training for a 1/2 marathon(and full marathon now!).  As a runner, I hold a lot of tension in my hips.  Generally, most hip related tightness is related to weakness in the hip muscles.  Pain is usually also felt in the knees and feet.

I’ve mentioned it before but Pigeon is one of my favorite yoga postures.  I could stay in that position ALL DAY!  It feels that good.  In addition to pigeon, here is a list of a few of my favorite yoga hip openers that are in my daily rotation.

Wide Legged Forward Bend – Not only is the posture great for opening the hips but is great for realigning the spine and stretching out hamstrings.  I like to do this posture after running.  It can also provide relief from headaches.

Wide Legged Forward Fold

Reclining Big Toe Pose – I like to start with my leg/foot straight up and then progress to moving the leg to the side from the hip joint.  A strap isn’t necessary if you are flexible enough.  I find that a strap can really extend the stretch, though.

Reclining Big Toe Pose w Strap

Revolved Triangle  – Another one that I could stay in for hours.  This feels good throughout the whole body.  You feel an opening not only in the hips but in the whole side body.

Any plans for the weekend?

What muscles do you hold the most tension in?

Do you have a favorite yoga posture or stretch?

  1. Those poses look fantastic! I am HORRIBLE about stretching or taking the time to do any sort of yoga- something I’m trying to work on! I hold most of my tension in my neck and upper back. It’s definitely carrying kids around and picking things up day that adds to the tension! Congrats on the fitfluential! And good luck getting everything switched!

  2. No plans for the weekend. Which is kind of nice! My hips are tight. My left is always tighter than my right. I agree with pigeon pose, it’s the best!
I hold a lot of tension in my mid back. I’m working with a PT and he did mention that yoga would be good for me. Do you have a favorite yoga dvd geared towards runners that you’d recommend?
    First marathon, how exciting!

  3. Congrats on the marathon and self-hosting switch! I’m still a bit overwhelmed with all the details of plug-ins, etc… but am stepping back for now, since the majority is done! We can support each other as we learn in the process. 🙂
And yay for your marathon, too!! I’m so excited for you! Love the hip poses too, I do the reclining big toe and the triangle one, need to try the others!

  4. Thank you for posting the yoga poses. Pigeon is one of my favorites! Forward bend always shows me how NOT flexible I am. My head is nowhere near the floor!

  5. congratulations on getting your own domain name and home – psst…if you need any kind of WordPress help, let me know…. 😀

  6. Angela, I love this post! My hips tighten up whenever I run over 10 miles, so I needed all of these poses…looking forward to trying them!
I just ran a half in Hampton – great course. If I were ever going to try a marathon, I would want a place like that. Good luck on your training. =)
