“Life is not a race. It’s a gift. Enjoy it. Don’t rush through it.”  – Daniella Kessler

How many times a day do you take a deep, meaningful breath?  Probably never if you are like the average person.  We spend our days rushing from the moment our eyes pop open in the morning till the time our heads hit the pillow at night.  With all that rushing, our breaths tend to be shallow.  Our thoughts are scattered. We are always thinking of what’s next, not what’s now.

We’ve been talking a lot about the monkey mind a lot in yoga lately. Last week I attended my usual yoga class but the teacher decided to do a 15 minute yoga nidra at the end. I was all snuggled under a blanket with a bolster under my feet. I thought I fell asleep as soon as Heather started the guided meditation.  What I now know is that I was in a yogic sleep. It’s the place between sleep and consciousness that’s good for emotional and physical healing, rewiring your brain, and self-exploration. In yoga nidra, you may be aware of sound or activity around you.  The thing is that you don’t react to it. You are immersed in the most relaxed possible state.

Crazy fact: One hour of yoga nidra is equivalent to many hours of restful sleep.

I think I need some more of that!

Life feels fast because our minds are always onto the next thing rather than what’s happening now. It’s hard to feel a connection when there’s so much rushing in our lives.

By slowing down, being present and in the moment, you can learn to appreciate the little things in life.

Attending a weekly yoga nidra class would be fantastic way to slow down my mind but it’s not always convenient to get to the studio.

The next best thing is building a daily meditation practice.

Thankfully, there’s an app for that.  And all it takes is 5 minutes to get started and to feel the difference.

Here’s 4 Meditation Apps to help guide you into mindfulness.

Headspace

This app promises that 10 sessions, 10 minutes a day, can train your mind towards a happier life.  The first 10 sessions are free but further use of the app after those sessions requires a fee.

Happify

This app can be used anytime, anyplace.  There’s no need to have a set meditation time. Want to do this in your office at work? No problem. Walking during your lunch break? Got it! There are activities each week that help change your perspective to a more optimistic view and to start seeing improvement in your life satisfaction.

Stop, Breathe and Think

This app asks questions in a simple survey as a way to “check in” with yourself with how you are feeling. You are then lead through a guided meditation based on the results.

Smiling Mind

Meditation isn’t just for adults.  Get the whole family involved with this app that’s geared for ages 7-adult.  Plus, who wouldn’t want to put a smile on their mind?

As a bonus for us runners, meditation HELPS a ton in running.  Think about what happens when you are in a tough workout or race.  Does your mind start to get crazy about how hard everything is and how you need to stop RIGHT NOW?  That’s the normal response. But research shows you can control the negative chatter with meditation. I know Negative Nellie pops up way too often in my head. I’d like to do everything I can to shut her up. And meditation can help with that, I’m all for it!

  1. I’ve tried a few different apps for meditating, and the one I use the most is the Calm app. I will admit that i don’t use it very often even though I should. I like the idea of the one that asks you questions and then uses the results for your meditation!

  2. I have an app on my Apple Watch that reminds me to breathe every hour. It’s such a perfect reminder! And on my phone I like the Calm app. I recommend it to my teenage patients quite often!

Love that prAna sweater! I was looking at that one. I may need to shop!

  3. I recently started having problems with anxiety and decided to start meditating. I do it now and then but not daily. On the days where I feel like I could slip into a panic attack I make sure that I can meditate before bed (my panic attacks have only happened at night and I wake up in a full blown panic) I was so surprised how much it helped

  4. I have a huge challenge in “leaving my mind” and just focusing on the moment…there’s always so much other stuff demanding my attention. I can see where meditation would come in handy when you’re struggling through a tough race…heck, I could have really benefited from that this morning when I was on the treadmill LOL

  5. I like Danette May, but you have to be a member to get most of the meditations.

Before her, I used the Calm App & I really liked that one too. I don’t meditate a long time, but I’ve been doing it for more than a year now & I think it’s definitely made a difference.

Except Dec & Jan — nothing seems to make a difference in those dark months (although I still do meditate during them).

  6. That’s so cool! I’ll have to check some of these out. I use Calm and I love their body scans. Sometimes I’ll use it to help me fall asleep when my mind is racing. I think meditation is a HUGE benefit and it should become a daily practice!

  7. Just reading this reminded me to take some really deep belly breaths! That is crazy that it is equal to sleep… although it makes sense. And yes, definitely something I need more of.

  8. These are so helpful! I find my mind wandering a lot during the work day, and it’s nice to have that time to reflect and relax. Destressing is good for the soul! I used to just watch YouTube videos on guided meditation, but now it’s so much easier to just open an app and go. Thanks for sharing!
