Marathon Monday Week 8 + #BestRun

It’s time for Marathon Monday again!

Last week was a tough week. My legs and feet were quite fatigued after the speed/5 by the 5th 5k   session on Tuesday. I was also really tired and made it a point to get to bed earlier each night there after. By Saturday, everything was feeling better for my 20 miler.

Here’s how the week looked:

Sunday: Easy 5 miles + yoga

Monday: 60 minute bike trainer + total body strength and core

Tuesday: 7 miles total. 5k as part of 5 by the 5th + 2 miles speed @ 7:26 and core

Wednesday: 50 minute bike trainer + total body strength and core

Thursday: Easy 5 miles + yoga and core

Friday: REST!

Saturday: 20 miles + gentle yoga

I’m always willing to talk about running and I love reading other runners stories. When I was trying to think about some of my best runs there seems to always be a central theme. Any run that I can do by or near water makes for a great one. It’s no surprise that a lot of the races I choose to do locally have a portion by the water. Also sunrises. Nothing makes me more happy than seeing the sun come up on a run especially during the summer. I love how the sky lights up. A run can instantly become better once that happens.

A race day PR. A trail run. Running on the treadmill (Hmmm…maybe some days on the treadmill). Running with friends. Running with a legend. Freezing my a$$ off in the frigid temps and swearing the whole time. Coming back from an injury.

  1. Yay!! Great job on your 20 miler and so happy your training is going well. Those sunrises pictures are gorgeous. I love the different things that make up your best runs. Running by the water always makes me happy and I agree – any day that I can run is the best run ever.

  2. I always enjoy running at sunrise, especially down the shore in the summer! Sometimes it’s tough to wake up so early and lace up my sneakers, seeing the sun always gives me a little burst of energy 🙂

  3. This is a great way to do this post! You are so right…it can be really tough to nail just one run as the best, especially with the wide variety you have in there. We are all so lucky any day we are healthy enough to run.

  4. my best run this weekend was the pool running i did (only running i could do).

    my best run ever was the first tempo run i did last year which happened to be with a buddy training for the NYC marathon – i was struggling to keep up but i was puttin it all out there! it was amazing!!! i miss it!

  5. I find most of my great runs are by the water too! Something about those runs, even when they are awful, are better than my best runs at other locations.

  6. I love sunrises on a run– I don’t see them till the summer though! Love your collection of run pics! I just started to bring my phone on my runs but I am always so in the zone to take pics and when I race I don’t want to mess with it because I don’t want to lose a second… I’m crazy like that!

  7. Great job on your 20 miler! It’s hard to pick my favorite run, but lately I’ve really enjoyed the rare runs that my husband and I can do together. Before we had our girls, we did most of our long training runs together. Now we have to divide and conquer, so when we do get to run together, it makes it extra special. This January we took a family trip to Oahu, and one morning we got to do an amazing trail run to Ka’ena Point. That definitely makes my top 10 list!

I’ve been struggling with running the past few weeks–I just want nothing to do with it and every run felt awful…I took a couple of days to work on figuring out WHY and came to the conclusion that I was pushing myself too much (always trying to go further and faster than the last run). For my past few runs I made myself run slow, at an easy jog, and those runs were immediately better. It was a great reminder of why I run–not just to beat my previous run every time, but because I can and because it makes me feel good when I go with the pace/distance my body is ready for.
