Another week of workouts is done.  It’s hard to believe that the year is winding down.  I’m in the in between season and having fun, doing what I want. My only complaint?  Why does December feel like February?  I’m so cold ALL.THE.TIME!  At least the rain has stopped.  Can we get some snow again? PLEASE?

Monday

I did not plan on running today but after lifting at the gym, I felt an urge.  I could’ve run at the gym on the treadmill but I had an urge to run outside.  I didn’t have cold weather running gear with me so I went home, grabbed a jacket, gloves and a hat and hit the pavement for 3 miles.

It wasn’t the most time efficient thing to do but I still made it to work on time.  High 5 to me!

Tuesday

5 mile run, 8:51 avg/pace

I had a boat load of things to do today so another early morning run was on the books.  Thankfully, Kyle was able to join me.  Conversational pace is a great way to start a Tuesday.

Thursday

6 mile run, 8:37 avg/pace

About 7 years ago, I had an Exercise Physiologist intern at work, Erika.  We ran together a few times before she got married and moved away.  Recently, she moved back with her husband and new baby.  Her husband, Charles, reached out to me through Instagram about running groups that meet in the early morning.  Hmmmm…I think I know of some crazies! Today he joined Kyle and I for our zero dark thirty run. I had only met him briefly at their wedding reception 6.5 years ago…who knew we’d be meeting up to run in the dark years later?  It’s a small world!

5 mile trail run, 11:11 pace (good luck!)

It had been quite awhile since I’d done a trail run.  I missed it so!  I procrastinated quite awhile before heading out to the trailhead.  It was another cold morning (teens). I wasn’t sure what the conditions would be like but was happy to find mostly frozen dirt with patches of frozen puddles.  Thankfully, my feet stayed dry when I went through the ice in some spots.  FYI – My trail shoes (Saucony Peregrine ICE+  -> affiliate link) aren’t water proof but water resistant.  I can’t recommend them enough! If I had a choice, I’d be running on dirt everyday.

6.5 mile run, 8:43 avg pace

This run felt cold. Maybe even colder than Saturday’s?  I was so thankful to have company with Kyle.  Otherwise I would have procrastinated until it felt a little warmer.

I had a big moment for me prior to to this run.  It was the first time I’ve worn the Boston Marathon jacket I bought in 2015.  I swore I’d never wear it since I DNF the race.  After 3.5 years, I changed my mind.

  1. The extremely cold weather seems to be everywhere, and it’s way too early! I can’t decide on the snow…we currently have nothing LOL It’s kind of nice not having to worry about the ice and wet shoes, etc. But, when it’s this cold, I almost think we should at least have something to show for it 😉

  3. I’m glad you ran in your jacket after 3.5 years! I just finished writing a post that started the exact same way… no structure is so nice right now. And the cold! I hope that changes.

  4. It’s funny how we’re driven by different surfaces. I tried true trails this summer and I was so nervous about my footing.

    1. It takes time to feel comfortable with the trails. Navigating roots and rocks is tricky but it gets better the more you do it. Everyone wipes out. You just get back up and keep going!

  5. Its nice to have time when you’re not training for anything and have more flexibility with workouts! I’m worried that this cold December means we are going to have a pretty extreme winter. Glad you were finally able to wear the Boston jacket!

  6. SO happy to see you wearing your Boston jacket. If anyone deserves it – YOU do! Why punish yourself further? I think you have suffered enough my friend. And yes, it’s SOOOO cold and rainy. Where is the snow??? I’m hoping it comes back very soon for both our sakes 🙂

  8. You look good in the Boston jacket. I’m glad you changed your mind. I like the tights you are wearing in the top picture too! It’s wonderful your friend’s husband joined you for some early miles. Conversations with new running buddies make things interesting. Thanks for linking!

    1. Thank you! When I wore the jacket I told my friend that I was running with that I was going to burn the jacket if I got hurt on the run. Ironically, my achilles puffed up afterwards. I think I need to burn it to get rid of the demons! Lol! My tights are from Athleta. I’m obsessed and wish they had more color options. I’d buy them all!

  9. I’m envious of your no-structure training! Marathon training right now is preposterously difficult. I’d so be on dirt all the time too. Love it. But the trails will be deeply snow-covered/icy soon. Sigh.

    1. The Peregrine ICE is great for keeping feet warm on wet runs. They handle the trails well but also running in fresh snow. Meet feet love ’em!

  10. Perfect weather here in Az. Got in 10 hours of swim, bike, run, yoga/strength last week. Hoping for more of the same this week!
