Before we jump into last week’s workouts, I wanted to send out my thoughts to all of those in who have been impacted by Hurricane Irma.  I can’t even begin to fathom what you are going through.  Stay safe friends!

Last week’s workouts were all over the place.  I got a diagnosis on my ankle and found myself yet again in a boot.  I’m feeling quite bummed out about it all.  I go from angry to sad and then acceptance that it’s just another bump in the road.  On the first day that I had the boot, I left work in such a crappy mood.  There’s only so much “advice” you can hear from people before you start snapping. Just to be clear – this injury did not happen from running and it do not happen because I’m a runner. If you tell me that I need to stop running then you better have my chart in front of you and have an MD after your name.  If not, zip it.

Anyway…

Monday

Julie and I hiked up Gunstock on the trails (took us about an hour?). Originally we were planning on doing a sunrise run up Mount Major before but then my ankle drama came up.  I said screw my ankle and went with the hike.  It didn’t feel 100% good but it didn’t leave me limping in pain either. 60 minute summit yoga class and then we opted to hike down the maintenance road (about 30 minutes) instead of taking the chairlift. Best decision ever.

Tuesday

The holiday weekend was clearly over when my alarm went off dark and early Tuesday morning.  Back to the gym I go.

20 minutes Stepmill with alternating 20 right side steps, 20 front steps, 20 left side steps -> Do this for a major glute workout!

20 minutes Arc Trainer

Lower body and core

KB lunge matrix – front, side, reverse

TRX Curtsey Squats

Calf raises

TRX pike planks

TRX bicycle planks

Morning Flow Yoga

And then later in the day I got the boot. Yay.

Wednesday

Another gym day.  Thankfully, my orthopedic understands the importance of staying active even when dealing with an injury.  Rather than chaining me to the boot 24/7, he gave me a lace up support brace to wear when I go to the gym and am walking around the house.

45 minutes Bike

DB chest press

TRX push ups

TRX row

KB squat press

KB plank rows

Bar hangs 30 sec x 3 (pull up prep)

Eccentric pull ups

Ab wheel – I forgot how ridiculously hard those things are!

Thursday

30 minutes Arc Trainer

Squat rack lunges

Squat press

TRX curtsey squats

TRX pike planks

TRX bicycle planks

Started PT with super easy seated wobble board rotations and ankle strengthening with bands.

Friday

Rest except for PT home exercises

Saturday

I couldn’t ride as long as I wanted to because I slept in and kid sports. So it was a short bike ride followed up with PT home exercises.

Sunday

Parenting duties called so I had to scrap an outdoor ride with an indoor workout. 60 minute bike followed up with a Bosu core workout.  It’s hard to believe that for 7 years, the basement workout was my staple.  I never thought I would be happy with being a gym member again, but I really find I get such a better workout there.

I’m hoping that this week I continue to see pain and ROM improvement in my ankle. My PT told me it could take 3 months before I’m fully healed.  He wouldn’t get me a time frame of when I’d be back to running although the plan is to get me on the AlterG soon. Fingers crossed this ligament isn’t as much of a pain as everyone says it is to heal.

  2. Totally zip it with the advice people!! I cannot imagine how much “advice” you have to endure. I hope you’ve been drinking :-)
    That hike and yoga class looked amazing!!! Hard to be down when you’re up there, right? :-) And yes to having a doc who understands you can still workout with your foot in a boot…or brace.

  3. Between having a chronic illness and then going through infertility, you know that I get ALL the advice from everyone. SHUT IT PEOPLE. If I want your input, I will take it. As a coach, it can be hard for me to keep my mouth shut myself when I hear people doing stupid things, so I usually only intervene if they are doing something dangerous and really don’t know better, and especially if they are my friend. Or they ask. Otherwise. zzzzziippped!

  4. Oh, trust me when I tell you that I’ve had to hold myself back from punching people after they tell me I shouldn’t be running. Did you know running is bad for your joints? No, RA is bad for your joints. I always feel better after a run. The hard part for me is getting out the door because I ache so badly. Why would people tell you to stop something that makes you feel good?

    Rant over. I hope you heal up quickly!

  5. I hate all that unsolicited advice. I hid my last two foot issues from most everyone! (No boot required.) I have a very understanding podiatrist who I always use if at all possible. My ortho is not sympathetic in the least. Quit Running is his standard response. I applaud you for staying active and doing what you can!

    • I haven’t used it in forever until I saw someone on Insta using it and thought I’d give it a whirl. Yowzers! And my ankle needs to get better asap so we can meet up for a run date. :)

  6. The unsolicited advice on running from non-runners is endlessly frustrating. The most frustrating is when it’s an injury that didn’t happen from running and people still act as if running is the culprit. That’s great that your doctor understands things and gave you a brace for the gym! Also, my glutes are burning just reading about that stepmill workout.

    • Picture getting non stop running advice from your mom, dad, grandma and grandpa all day. That was my life for 8+ hours the first day I had the boot on at work. #longestdayever

  7. Thanks for sharing that BOSU workout! I need to make an effort to work my core more!
    I HATE unsolicited advice…people think they’re being helpful, but sometimes you just want to say MYOB…or is it just me?

  8. You had a great week of workouts even being in a boot! I’ll have to try out that stepmill workout sometime! I’m always on the lookout for glute work. Hopefully you are back to running sooner rather than later.
