First physical therapy appointment with new PT.  We worked on calf and ankle strengthening and stretching followed up 10 minutes on the Alter-G. The orthopedic that I saw last week wanted me to switch PT practices to one that had an Alter-G in an effort to maybe (fingers and toes double crossed) that I could manage to run the Mount Washington Road Race.  I’m trying to remain optimistic but it doesn’t really seem doable.

Anyway, the Alter-G is really cool but very strange too. It was my first time using one and man was it weird.  The best way I could describe it was that it felt like someone was holding me up by my hips but I could still feel my feet hitting the treadmill with each step.  And it felt like you were being given a wedgie the whole time.  Or at least someone was attempting to do it.  I’ll be spending time on it for each session, building up my time. Hopefully I will need less and less support with each session.

  1. My first time using an Alter G was in 2011 after I had hip surgery and it allowed me to run so much sooner than I would have been able to do otherwise! It is such a strange feeling. Glad it gives you the chance to run though!

  2. ok that is a FANTASTIC description of the ALTER G.
Ive had friends use it for rehab and Ive never been albe to envision or imagine what the heck it felt like!!

  3. I hope Target has contacted you by now :-)
That is super weird about the Alter-G and not at all how I would think it would feel. And that 100 workout is insane!!!
Glad you’re working it all out but I’m sure it’s a lot harder than you’re making it look. Hang in there mama and keep taking those outdoor rides!

  4. That 100 workout sounds intense! Nice work!

I’m glad you can go pool running and use the Alter G- there’s something about using that running motion when you’re injured that gave me a mental boost.

  5. I’ve never tried an Alter-G but it sounds like a great rehabbing tool. I’m very impressed with your commitment to stay race ready. From personal experience, it’s one of the toughest things to do. Keep it up! Bodies heal — and that’s the best part of all. Thanks for linking with us!
