It’s really no surprise that I got the cold germs that have been living in my house for the past week. When you have 2 toddlers who routinely give kisses that end up with a mouth full of snot, you can expect that you’ll be going down too at some point. So yesterday, as the day wore on, I began to feel stuffy, achy, and tired. I knew my legs could not have been that sore still from Saturday’s workout or Tuesday’s run.
When I rolled over and saw 5 a.m. on my clock this morning, I knew a run or any workout wasn’t going to happen today. When I’m sick my body needs to rest. The general rule of thumb with exercise and illness is if the symptoms are above the neck(runny nose, sneezing, sore throat, etc) it’s usually fine to go about your regular exercise routine. However, intensity and duration should be decreased. If the symptoms are below the neck(chest congestion, hacking cough, upset stomach, etc) then exercise should be withheld. No exercise also if you have a sinus infection, fever, fatigue or widespread muscle aches. (source)
I personally would not even be thinking about running let alone walking if I had a sinus infection. I had my first one last year. I have had sinus pressure before but this was a whole new level! I never knew that is what an actual sinus infection felt like. The pressure was so intense that I couldn’t even keep my eyes open. I wanted to stick pins in my cheek bones to “pop” my sinuses. I hope I never have to go through that again!
Today I’m planning on drinking multiple cups of hot water, honey, and lemon. I fell in love with this concoction while pregnant and was unable to take any cold medicine. This soothes a sore throat and helps open up the nasal passages through the steam of the water. When nap time rolls around for the kiddos, Mama will be resting, too, with a cup of Honey Lemon Water, a box of tissues, and trashy TV.
Hopefully I’ll be feeling better tomorrow. I want to do Aerial Yoga this weekend!
