It’s The Little Things

Hi everyone!

Yesterday was the hubs birthday. So to celebrate his birthday, I woke up early and went for a 6 mile run while he stayed in bed since he’s an old guy now.

Haha! Just kidding! Sort of.

For the past few runs, I’ve been trying out new socks. The nice people at Sof Sole recently sent me a few of their Performance Socks. If you’re like me, how a sock fits is huge whether it’s running, walking, hiking, snowboard, or working out in general. You don’t want blisters or super sweaty feet. I like a little cushion too. These socks rock! During each run that I’ve worn them on, it’s been super wet and rainy. I was expecting blisters from my wet feet but I got nothing. My feet felt comfortable the whole time.

While I was running, all I could think about were hard boiled eggs. I had to have one for breakfast. Of course, I didn’t actually get to eat my breakfast till at least an hour after I got home. Mama duty was calling as soon as I walked through the door. I scarfed down an egg and a Kale Protein Smoothie. We just got a new to us protein powder over the weekend – Sun Warrior. It’s good! Not chalky and has nice chocolate flavor.

Ron had the day off but spent the morning getting my car inspected. Happy Birthday! Now pay $300. While he was gone the kids and I wrapped his birthday presents and frosted his cake.Β  (FYI – toddlers can’t keep a secret when it comes to presents. Daddy open Mama’s present. It’s a shirt!) He usually chooses a chocolate cake. Nothing fancy. Just chocolate. This year he decided he wanted a lemon cake with lemon frosting. What? I searched the internet for a good recipe. The one he picked is probably the most sugary thing I have ever heard of. But it’s his birthday so the birthday boy gets what he wants. Just don’t tell him that I modified the recipe. A LOT! πŸ˜‰

Not so pretty, huh? I can bake but I can’t frost a cake for the life of me. It always looks lumpy and sloppy. It’s what’s on the inside that counts right?

We decided on a birthday lunch rather than a dinner. Ron had been craving a burger lately so we decided on Lexi’s Joint. I got the Green Lantern Bean Burger. EXCELLENT!

The perfect combination of spicy and avocado. Two of my favorites.

Here’s a few random pics of food I’m loving lately:

Lemon Cake w/ Lemon Frosting, Stacy’s Gingerbread Pita Chips (beyond amazing!), Roasted Acorn Squash, Guacamole on a Trader Joe’s British Muffin (so good), Roasted Sweet Potato with scoop of Almond Butter

The rest of the day was pretty low key. Opening presents, eating cake (which was really, really good) and taking an afternoon walk. Isn’t it funny how your birthday’s change as you get older? Before it was all about partying it up. Now, we are content to hang out, relax and enjoy some family time. Like my friend, Kierston says, “It’s the little things.” πŸ™‚

I’m linking up with Jenn for another WIAW.

I was not compensated for this post. All opinions are my own.

How do you like to celebrate your birthday?

  1. happppy belated to your mans!
I laughed when I saw the cake as my mantra has always been IF IT’S LEMON IT IS NOT DESSERT—IT’S A PUNISHMENT πŸ™‚

  2. Happy Birthday to your hubby. I’m glad you & your family had such a fabulous day together. I’m with you on being awful when it comes to frosting. Ill try my hardest to make it look pretty, but it never happens. I’ve actually come to accept that I just don’t have that talent lol.

    p.s. LOVE your running top!

  3. Great post!!! Happy birthday to your hubs! Love the cake…and love that you modified it … I won’t tell nobody!

Those pita chips look mighty tasty!

It really is the little things isn’t it? πŸ™‚ They make me smile a whole lot! Thanks for the mention my friend!

  4. Birthdays are the best! And it’s so sweet that you make the cake for him! Haha. I still remember when I was in 8th grade I asked my mom for a pink strawberry cake. We get home and I find out that I have to make it. To say that I was upset will be the understatement of the century. I mean, sure, I love baking, but that just seems so wrong to make your *own* cake! Plus, I was like, 13. The past two years I’ve made my own as well, but I feel like that’s different because I’m older and I actually WANTED to πŸ˜€

  5. Happy Birthday to Ron! He is one lucky guy (although I’m sure he already knows this)

Being a Mom of three small kids I have had to re-define the meaning of celebration. Pre kids? Go out to dinner with friends, be showered in gifts all day long… Post Kids- going to the bathroom by myself and being showered in homemade macaroni necklaces. πŸ˜‰ It’s all good!

  6. Oh, I’m so glad I’m not the only one who can’t ice a cake. It looks delicious, though! I’ve come to appreciate lemon desserts more as I’ve gotten older. Sounds like the perfect way to celebrate, other than the car inspection. But if he’s like my husband, he probably enjoyed crossing that ‘to-do’ item off the list! Happy birthday to Ron!

  7. Haha! I’m laughing as I read this because I am horrible at frosting things! I love to bake, and am good at it but when it comes to frosting, I suck! I have not seen those gingerbread pita chips but will be hunting for them now that I know they exist! Yum!

  8. You are so pretty!!!!! I love that striped jacket πŸ™‚ I would so much rather hang out with close friends and be low key than go to some crazy club or something!
