I’m Done with Rest

Last week was one strange week.

I had planned on it being a rest week post race. Restย  – as in cross training but no running. Well it turned into a complete and total rest week. No running. No cross training. No nothing.

I mentioned already that I had a nasty migraine that hung around till Tuesday afternoon. Then I started to get a sore throat/nasal congestion cold from my little germ factory kiddos on Wednesday. My plan of cross training, yoga, strength workouts got placed on the back burner. Obviously, my body was trying to tell me something. My immune system was being attacked and wanted rest. So for once, I listened. It’s amazing what you learn as you get older!

I can’t remember the last time when I did not have one sweaty workout in 7 days. I think it’s been years. I fully support a rest day or two each week but rest weeks – not my thing.

So now that I’m well rested,ย  do I feel completely rejuvenated after my break? As with everything, I noticed benefits and not so good results.

Benefitsย  –

  • Sleeping in till 6 a.m.! Although my body was still naturally waking up at zero dark thirty, I was able to fall back to sleep for a little bit more shut eye.
  • Less laundry. No extra sweaty workout clothes to add to the ever present laundry pile.
  • Lazy Saturday morning making waffles followed by a family walk.

Cons –

  • Sleep – I wasn’t sleeping as soundly as usual. I would wake 2-3 times a night and not be able to fall back to sleep. Very unusual for me. I’ve never had a problem falling or staying asleep.
  • Aches and pains in new places. I felt like I was 90 years old. My knees, shoulders, elbows all were stiff. I’m blaming the lack of synovial fluid being warmed up with exercise to keep things lubricated. Now I know how some of my patients feel!
  • Crabbiness. I was one cranky chick last week. My usual way of dealing with it is to sweat it out. I apologize to anyone I snapped at last week. It wasn’t me. It was the sweat trying to get out!
  • Digestive. Sorry for the TMI but things weren’t flowing as usual in the digestive system.

On Sunday, I was feeling better from my cold and ready to get sweaty again. I busted out a 45 minute hill climb workout on the treadmill followed by weights and PT exercises.

It. felt. so. good.

I felt like my old self again.

Happy, smiling, sweaty!

Hopefully this week will be more like I had originally planned. Cross training, yoga, strength training. Fingers crossed no more bad luck is following me!

And that is truly marvelous!

What’s the longest break you’ve taken from sweaty exercise?

How was your weekend?

  1. Sorry to hear you never started feeling better last week, but I’m glad you were able to see that perhaps your body needed rest. Good for you on listening & recharging your immune system. Prayers that your week continues staying positive as it already has <3

  2. There is just something about a good sweat!!! After having both girls I was sidelined for months…I walked a lot but nothing like those awesome sweats you get from really pushing your body hard! I hope this week is healthy for you and full of sweat sessions!!

  3. I was shaking my head in agreement with all of your benefits and cons. I sleep SO much better when I am exercising. Love the 90 year old woman comment. Unfortunately I took a lot of time off from sweating when my kids were younger.

  4. I have been ill all month and trying to come back it from it. I ran 6 miles Sat. and Sun. I was so sore I just barely made it to. I feel like I’ll never be strong enough to do a half again.

  5. I’m embarking on my own week of rest after running a marathon on Sat. Right now I’m so sore I can’t even imagine moving faster than my current snail’s pace, but I’m sure I’ll be going absolutely crazy in few days! I’m leaving on a biz trip tomorrow, so the crazy schedule will prevent me from doing anything stupid. And I have to admit I’m pumped for two nights in a hotel room by myself!!

  6. I notice I don’t sleep as well on my rest days. Too much energy that I can’t get rid of! But it sounds like your body NEEDED the time off, so I’m glad you listened. ๐Ÿ™‚

  7. We really are on the same trajectory! I am hunkered down in bed right now feeling so cruddy. I have a feeling there won’t be much in the way of sweat in my week, either. Sometimes, though, as much as we hate it, it does make us appreciate being able to do what we love that much more.

  8. I’m so happy that you were able to sweat again yesterday – I know the feeling of needing to workout but knowing that your body isn’t really ready!!! Way to listen to your body!!! And here’s to a week of sweating!!

  9. OMG I am SO glad I’m not the only one whose digestive system gets all out of track when I don’t work out. I seriously thought I was a freak. And I feel ya. I was down with a sinus infection and took an entire week off right in the middle of my century training, but it’s just the way it is sometimes, and when we take the time to rest, we actually fully recover rather than staying sick for weeks on end. Glad you’re back! ๐Ÿ™‚

  10. OMG my CON LIST would be 2190378977846783264783743 pages long because exercise seriously TRANSFORMS ME into the person I am! I cannot even remember what I am like when I don’t work out because I am at it EVERY SINGLE DAY! I am going nuts over here thinking about how you went 7 days with nothing! Holy MOLY!!!!! I am THRILLED to hear you’re ready to GET AT IT again! Weee!
