Barilla Microwave Meals

I recently was given the opportunity to try the new Microwave Meals from Barilla.

At first I was hesitant since I usually don’t buy frozen dinners or microwave meals for my family. There was a time when I lived off those for lunch at work. I mostly did it for the convenience rather than the taste and texture. That experience left a bad taste in my mouth, so to speak, about microwave meals. Bland, boring and with questionable ingredients. But Barilla is our go to choice for pasta and sauces so I thought I’d give it a try especially since the meals are all natural and preservative free.

I received a package of 5 meals:

  • Penne with spicy marinara
  • Penne with Tomato and Basil Sauce
  • Penne with Traditional marinara
  • Whole Wheat Penne with Tomato and Basil
  • Whole Wheat Fusilli with Vegetable Marinara

I was pleasantly surprised to look at the ingredient list and see things that I could pronounce and would use when cooking from scratch. One thing I’ve learned since my microwave meals from years ago, if I can’t pronounce it, it’s not edible to me!

Each package contains 1 serving of pasta (noodles and sauce), is less than 320 calories, and is 100% natural with no preservatives. They also contain between 9-11 grams of protein per serving and are rich in fiber, vitamin A, and the whole grain pastas are a great source of iron. The sodium content is higher than I usually prefer but I would adjust my sodium consumption for the day to accommodate it.

The best part about these meals of course is that they are ready in just 60 seconds! Perfect for days when I have two hungry toddlers wanting to eat 5 minutes ago. When you open the package, the sauce is stored separately from the noodles, allowing you to place as much, or as little, sauce on them as you want. That also means no soggy, mushy noodles.

My favorite of the meals was the Whole Grain Mezze Penne with Tomato and Basil Sauce. The pasta was firm, not mushy and the sauce was rich. I added sauteed spinach, baby bella mushrooms and green peppers to it for more of a nutritional punch. I split this meal with the kiddos who gobbled it down in no time flat. Ron had the spicy marinara and I tasted a bite. It was delicious! I kind of wish I would have picked that one for myself!

Overall, I am quite pleased with Barilla Microwave Meals. They are a great option to have on hand for days when I don’t want to pack a lunch for work or when we need a quick meal after coming home from a busy day during the week.  I do wish they made more sauce options for the whole grain pasta, though.
