Well that was a short and fast week! Happy Friday!
Remember that little Headstand Pose Challenge that I had going all month? How did it go for those of you participating? I’ve been dreading writing this post. I did not accomplish my goal. I got a big DNH (Did Not Headstand). Boo! I really wanted to get up into that wonderful pose and feel the rush without the help of a wall or Ron holding my feet.
So what went wrong? Looking back, I can find numerous flaws. The biggest being not practicing the prep moves daily. I did dolphin plank as much as possible but that’s about it. I also had a cold/allergies for the majority of the month and being inverted was not appealing or pleasant.
I’m upset that I didn’t achieve my goal in one month. Maybe that was unrealistic? I’m not going to wallow in it. I WILL get into Headstand Pose. Just not today. I think it’s more of a long term goal for me right now. So here’s my new plan:
- Keep doing planks daily.
- Practice inversions at least 1x/week to get comfortable being upside down.
- Work on building more upper body strength (hello strength training).
I do think that the core is the center of achieving Headstand but in just attempting it I’ve found that my upper body (shoulders, deltoids, lats, etc) need to be strong to stabilize and support as well.
I hope those of you that accepted the challenge reached your goal!
Next time I post a picture like this there will not be a wall behind me!
I think the biggest thing I learned from this challenge is that not every goal will be achievable by xx date. You will have to re-evaluate and set a new time frame or maybe even a more achievable goal. Hard work and commitment are the foundation to achieving any goal in life. If you don’t put the work in, it’s not going to come to you.
Speaking of goals, I have been non-compliant in posting my monthly 2012 goal summary. Mostly because I’ve reached almost all of them already! Well, except that whole reading a book a month thing. Grrr! I can’t keep up with that.
So now that we are at the half way mark through the year (what???!!!) I thought I’d set some new goals for the remainder of 2012. I’m still working on that list but I’ll let you know when it’s ready!
Have a great weekend! Come back on Monday ’cause I got a little giveaway involving these babies:
Questions of the Day
Did you conquer the Headstand Pose Challenge?
What do you do when you don’t accomplish your intended goal?

Oh head colds and allergies are no fun standing upright let alone trying to stand on your head

Some of my goals have time frames, others do not. Although, I won’t let a deadline define my efforts knowing I will have put my best foot forward
You’ve got a great handle on this and I enjoyed reading this post!

I also have a couple of goals that I didn’t accomplish this month. One of them also involved reading a book. Ugh. I remind myself of the goals I did accomplish and move on. Sometimes I will add the unaccomplished goal to the next month or wait until later in the year.

No headstand conquered over here, either. I definitely missed some days of core work, but I do feel like I’m much closer than a month ago. I never would have taken the time to work toward it without your prompting, so thanks!

Headstands can be not just difficult but scary. There’s something about having to trust that you can hold yourself up that can make it as much of an emotional challenge as much as a physical challenge. I’ve learned so much about my emotions from practicing yoga. That’s why I love restorative sessions too — you get to really explore a pose.

I can’t imagine trying to do inversions with a head cold! I can barely bend over to tie my shoes when my head is full.
I tend to be pretty relaxed about hitting a goal as long as I’m making progress in the right direction. You can’t always anticipate what things will happen that will throw off your schedule.
Good luck on continuing progress towards the headstand.

Tripod headstand for a few steady seconds was a success (which is small for most but HUGE for me)! The supported headstand (or whatever the other one is called), still need to work on my core to be better able to control my legs once I get them in the air. I can get them up there, and then I end up flipping over! Still having fun with this though and I see my arms and feel my core getting stronger.
the prep poses are key! i totally get that. I often find myself rushing to get the headstand and completely bonk.
You definitely will conquer headstand. Yes prep poses and consistency is a big part of it but I also know for me, there’s a mental part that I need to conquer with regard to inversions. I just don’t feel comfortable being upside-down. While I thought that headstand was something that I could easily do, it’s taken me a while to feel more comfortable and confident in the pose.

I can’t do a headstand with my forearms on the floor like that, but I can do the kind where you get in a tripod and then kick your legs up. Not sure if that counts for yoga, though!
Up until a couple of years ago, I could still do backbends (err…wheel) without a problem, but in a yoga class, doing any kind of inversion makes me nauseous. So strange. Must be getting older!
