It’s another edition of Monthly Workouts for Runners BY Runners. It was originally supposed to go live last Wednesday but then stomach flu hell hit my house and I was out of the office for more days than I wanted. Thankfully, the girls were ok with moving the posting date.
Here’s the previous month’s workouts if you missed them:
Stuck Inside Workouts for Runners
Two-a-Day Workouts for Runners
Upper Body Workouts for Runners
Injury Prevention Exercises for Runners
This month the focus is on treadmill workouts for runners. This time of year, I tend to use my treadmill more often. While I’d prefer to run every single run outside, sometimes time and weather conditions make me choose the treadmill instead. Some people loathe it. Others love it. I’m more of the middle of the road. I can tolerate it as long as I have some good music or something to watch. I tell myself it’s good mental training too. If I can tolerate a workout on the treadmill and not poke my eyes out in boredom, it’ll pay off in a race scenario.
Whenever I’m on the treadmill, switching up the incline and/or speed usually keeps me entertained and my mind occupied so my eyes are safe from poking. This workout combines the best of both – hill training and a speed ladder to finish off the workout. You can choose to do the workout once if you have 35 minutes or less to run. Or you can repeat the workout entirely if you have more time/mileage that you need to reach. Or repeat only the hills or ladder portion.
The possibilities are endless loads of treadmill fun!
And here are even more Treadmill Workouts from 5 of my running friends. Click on the picture to take you to their workout. And don’t forget to Pin away so you have a stash of workouts on hand whenever you need it.
Nellie shares a quick treadmill blast.
Of course, the Sarah wants us to Embrace the Hill.
Laura shares a Fartlek run for speed work.
Allie hits the up button to mix it up.
Carly shares how to have fun while running in place.
We are continuing our monthly round up into 2017. But we are switching it up a bit. We’ll still be sharing workouts every so often but in addition, we’ll share topics concerning every runner. Keep your eyes peeled later this month for “Run with It!”

Treadmill – love it, hate it, tolerate it?
When are you most likely to choose the treadmill? Heat or cold?
my race is in APRIL.
it be cold outside here for here 🙂
I BETTER LEARN TO LOVE IT.
The treadmill is definitely great mental training if nothing else!! I have come to absolutely love mine, since it has saved me on so many snow days. Love this round up and all the workouts I now get to try!!

I think the only way that you can convince me to do these types of workouts is on the treadmill. And I HATE them. Until I am doing them!
I do avoid my treadmill whenever possible but sometimes you just have to! Thanks for the great workouts

These all look great! I’d rather run outside, but treadmill running CAN be fun and challenging!

So true! Yesterday I did Fartlek’s on the treadmill. It had been forever since I’ve done an organized speed workout. I went in feeling unsure of myself but came out feeling confident and surprised that I didn’t die at certain paces.
I tolerate the treadmill when it’s my only option – if I know I could be outside, I hate it! But if I am traveling or there’s dangerous conditions outside, it sure is better than not running!
I’ll take my run wherever I can get it!
interval workouts are the best! only way to handle a treadmill!

I completely agree!
What a great resource, I’m definitely pinning this for future treadmill runs.
One can never have too many treadmill workout options!
I need to try that incline workout! Thanks for sharing and for linking up with us!
Let me know if you try it! Thanks for hosting!
I’ll probably be doing a good part of my half marathon training on the treadmill- looking forward to giving these a try! Thanks for linking up 🙂
It does come in handy this time of the year. I won’t go near it during the summer but there’s days when I just can’t face another negative temp, not counting the windchill type of run.
Awesome! I like the idea of doing hill workouts on the treadmill. I’m not embracing the hills as much as I should outdoors… love the idea of some hill repeats inside on an icy morning!
It’s not so fun when you can’t get traction on an icy hill! And hill repeats with microspikes is not fun either!
Everyone could use a good treadmill workout this time of year! Too bad I just got a rower, lol! Thanks for linking up 🙂
I wish I liked rowing more. It’s such a fantastic workout. But when you feel sea sick after rowing for 1 minute, it’s not that fun!
This post came just at the right time for me! I’m at the annoying point of my runs needing to be longer but also not wanting to run outside in the dark on potentially icy streets. These workouts look great!
I was a devoted ‘miller my entire first year of running…and then I headed outside for the summer and I pretty much have not gone back. I can do “drills,” but to actually camp out for any length of time is pure torture (I think my max distance is 5 miles on the ‘mill). I’m gonna try some of these interval and ladder workouts, though. Thanks for sharing so many options 😉
I’ve been running on the treadmill for 5 years now and only ever venture outside when I do my annual Glasgow Great Scottish Run 10k!
I think it’s about time to maybe give some variety to my running.
Thanks for these workouts!
Oh man! These workouts look fun. Now I’m regretting cancelling my gym membership and wishing I had a treadmill so I could put these to the test. Maybe I’ll translate them to some outdoor speed sessions!
Great little training program. I always recommend including treadmill workouts to your daily routine.
I really don’t mind the treadmill. I’ve logged some pretty decent mileage on them in the past. I don’t have access to one currently, so all my runs are outside. Thank goodness I live in Vegas. 😊
Aprt from running, i often go to the crossfit to perform workout, especially, i like running on the treadmill. In this month, i bought one. ^^ So great! Glad to hear your sharing!
Thanks for the handy workouts! I don’t really like treadmill running although it is helpful for speed training, I much prefer the track, and running outside is ideal. Not always possible when it’s winter in Canada!
